Design and Technology make a unique and valuable contribution to the education and preparation for life for every child – at work or leisure. For some it can be the starting point for a highly satisfying and successful career. Design and Technology is about providing opportunities for students to develop their capability, combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding from across the school in order to create quality products. Through engaging with designing and making activities, pupils develop a range of skills and personal qualities which will support them through life and are valued by employers. These skills include independence, team working, resilience, resourcefulness, risk taking and entrepreneurship.

Key Stage 3

In KS3 D&T introduces increasingly sophisticated resources, including dedicated teaching environments, computer aided designing and manufacturing equipment and specialist teaching. Pupils work in carousel undertaking projects that cover Computing, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Textiles and Food. Throughout KS3 pupils will build skills and knowledge so that they are ready for GCSEs and their future work life.

Year 7

In year 7 pupils work on building their making and designing skills, whilst developing a broad knowledge of all material areas. Increasing in confidence, pupils will work in teams and individually to complete projects that include Rocket Cars, Monster Puppets and Cooking Skills.

Year 8

Year 8 asks pupils to solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. To do this effectively, they will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on additional disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Projects include Web Design, 3D Printing, LED Signs, pop culture inspired drawstring bags and meals based around a Healthy Diet.

Year 9

In Year 9 we extend and push pupils’ understanding of D&T, exploring Social, Environmental and Moral considerations. We encourage pupils to take risks so that they become resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. In Year 9 pupils make the decisions, fully realising relevant and inspiring tasks.

Key Stage 4

At the end of year 9 all pupils start a Level 2 course in Food and Cookery which continues into years 10 and 11. The course has a practical focus and is designed for learners who have an interest in food and cookery. It will provide pupils with experience of using different cooking techniques and methods to enable them to use these within further education or apprenticeships. Pupils will design and prepare their own meals as well as gain knowledge of Nutrition, Dietary needs, and different Cultures. In our first year of teaching we are delighted that over 83%, of pupils who completed the Level 2 course, gained above their target grade.

The New GCSE in D&T encompasses Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials, Electronics and Engineering. Pupils gain a core understanding of New and Emerging Technologies, Modern and Smart Materials and the Impact of Design on Society. Consolidating and enhancing skills from previous years, pupils will incorporate modern technologies, including Laser Cutting and 3D printing, with more traditional techniques. Alongside this pupils will gain specialist knowledge of a chosen area, in which they will design and make innovative products. Pupils will be given the opportunity to apply knowledge from across the curriculum in real life contexts, giving them confidence to succeed in whatever career or Level 3 course they choose.

After GCSEs pupils are able to progress on to A Level D&T Product Design, which has an emphasis on understanding and applying interactive design processes. Students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. This course is ideal for any student wishing to enter careers in Design, Engineering, Science, or Aeronautics.
