Learning Resource Centre

Welcome to the LRC

The LRC and provides a pleasant, bright and spacious environment for students to read and study. The LRC aims to promote reading for pleasure and to support students and teachers with learning across the curriculum.

Opening Times and Use

The LRC is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.00pm. Students often use the LRC for extra study alongside normal lessons and everyone is welcome to come along to read and relax quietly before and after school as well as during break and lunch times.

Facilities

There are approximately 16,500 Books and other resources available for loan to help with homework and study. Our stock is wide and varied and we keep it up to date as possible with books and other materials chosen to support the curriculum and to further students’ reading.

We have a good selection of contemporary fiction as well as the classics, and we are always interested to receive new suggestions or recommendations for books to purchase for the LRC.

As well as a wide range of books we subscribe to a variety of magazines, journals and newspapers. We offer specialist subject periodicals for further reading up to A-level.

Books are loaned out for two weeks initially and can be renewed upon request. Reminders are issued on overdue loans (and if books are not returned after a reasonable period, we will charge for replacing them). Students can borrow up to three items at any one time. Sixth Form students may borrow up to six books.

There are 30 computers and laptops for use outside lesson times for homework and research with printing and photo coping facilities.

We have chess sets and other board games available for students who wish to relax together (quietly !).

We use an online management system called MLS Eclipse (https://eclipse.microlibrian.net). This is the catalogue of all our resources where you can browse everything we have in the LRC, All students and staff can log into Eclipse either in school or remotely, to check their account including their book loans or to reserve items.

Lessons are time tabled to use the LRC for all year 7 and year 8 students in conjunction with the English Department; these support the schools wider literacy focus, study skills as well as quieter reading. Other subject teachers across all year groups also bring their classes to the LRC to use the resources.

Year 7 students receive induction lessons to the LRC which includes playing the ‘Reading Game’ and choosing a book to keep from the National ‘Booked Up’ Scheme.

Since 2002 the LRC has taken part in the national Shadowing scheme for the Carnegie Medal (an annual award for the best children’s or teenage fiction book). Our volunteer reading panels (from years 7-10) have had the opportunity to meet shortlisted authors, including Alan Gibbons, Marcus Sedgwick and the late Siobhan Dowd. Other reading clubs are organized according to demand.

Homework Club

This is open to all students Tuesday to Friday from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. Students are welcome to use the books and computer. A member of the teaching staff is always present to assist if needed.
