Suggested Reading Lists
RES encourages students to read a wide range of fiction for pleasure which will improve their skills in both writing and in analysing texts.
The following lists of books enjoyed by others their age may help them to identify possible books to read. Most are available from the RES Library.
Library Carnegie Group
The CILIP Carnegie Medal is the most prestigious prize awarded annually for the best book for teenagers/children. Young people take part in the scheme by ‘shadowing’ the official judges’ reading and voting. RES has participated in Shadowing since 2002. Our Carnegie reading panel has members of all abilities, drawn from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. All our readers are volunteers, and membership of the panel is very popular, because of the quality of both the books and the free biscuits! We also enjoy getting to discuss books with people from other years and houses that we would otherwise not have met before. Students who have participated in Shadowing are then invited to join the Library Student Books Committee which meets throughout the year and recommends new books for purchase.
